Posts are the atomic unit of this thing.

In wordpress-speak, there are special Posts called Pages.

Pages are intended to be used for more permanent topics. For example, on our site, Gonzo Ballet is a Page.

By default, the Home page of a wordpress site, the page you get when you simply go to high-entertainment.com, is a listing of the most recent posts. But you can also set the home page to be a particular wordpress Page. That’s what we did for our site.

The whole point behind all of this is that it lets you have a nice-looking web site with extremely low knowledge of the HTML programming that is usually required.
